Why won’t my sales order release to the warehouse in D365?
The order is confirmed and reserved, you select Release to warehouse, and you get an error or simply no shipment. The reason is almost always on the order, the customer or the warehouse, not deep in the system.
What release to warehouse does
Releasing creates load lines and shipments for the order lines, and, if the wave template is set up for it, a wave, a load and picking work. You can release from the order (Warehouse › Release to warehouse), from Warehouse management › Release to warehouse › Release sales orders to warehouse, from the Outbound load planning workbench, or with the batch job Automatic release of sales orders.
To see what was created for a line, select it and use Warehouse › Shipment details, Load details or Work details. No shipment means the release did not happen for that line.
1. The order or the customer is on hold
Sales order could not be released very often means an order hold. The hold can be on the order itself or on the customer account, so check both. Remove or resolve the hold and release again.
2. Credit management stopped it
An order on a credit management hold cannot be released until someone releases it from that hold. With the batch job, the Credit limit type setting decides whether a credit check is done at release, so an order can pass by hand and stop in the batch, or the other way round.
3. Not enough is reserved
Each warehouse has a Requirement for inventory reservation (Warehouse management › Setup › Warehouse › Warehouses):
- Require full reservation: lines are only released when the whole quantity is physically reserved (or planned for cross-docking). Otherwise: The full quantity must be physically reserved.
- Allow partial reservation: the line is released, but work is only created for the reserved quantity.
If the line is not reserved, start there: Why is my sales order line not reserved in D365?
4. The delivery address is not valid
No shipment can be created without a valid delivery address on the order and on every line, valid according to the address format of the country. An address imported from another system, or a line with its own address, is a frequent culprit.
5. The item or warehouse is not set up for warehouse management
Release to warehouse is for items and warehouses that use warehouse management processes. A line for an item without them, or for a warehouse without them, is not released. For warehouse management warehouses, there must also be a wave template of type Shipping for the warehouse.
6. The batch job skipped it
When orders are released by Automatic release of sales orders, check the job's own settings before the order:
- Quantity to release: with Physically reserved, unreserved quantities are left behind on purpose;
- Allow release of partially released orders: off means the rest of a partly released order waits;
- Locked order handling: with Skip locked orders, an order someone had open at that moment is skipped until the next run;
- Valid order types and the query under Records to include: the order may simply not be selected.
With Error on batch failure on in Warehouse management parameters, a failed release ends the batch job in Error, so it shows up instead of quietly ending.
Released, but still no work?
Then the shipment exists and the problem has moved to the wave: Why is no work created for my wave in D365?
